It’s called getting the message out to the masses.
When it comes to what to do and what not to do on LinkedIn, there are a LOT of opinions swirling around the internet.
I speak from experience. I’m not guessing, I have found what works and have had success. I work with my clients on the right way to brand themselves and be more visible on the world’s largest professional networking platform.
I’m busting open some myths to separate fact from fiction.
Myth: I have a profile here and I log on every couple weeks to connect to people who use the keywords I want to be connected to. I’m doing enough on LinkedIn.
Fact: Blindly connecting with people because their keywords come up in search is not the answer. You don’t necessarily have to post daily, but by being on the platform every day and engaging with a strategy (what I help people create and manage) more people will check out your profile, they will get to know you and what you do.
Myth: I am commenting on big accounts. I look for people on LinkedIn who have tens of thousands of followers or more. Just a few words in a comment, and BOOM! I’m done. Commenting on those large accounts will bring people over to my profile to see me.
Fact: Sure you could get a little more visibility by commenting on big accounts, but are those the people you want to start conversations with? Or those your prospective referrals or clients? Probably not.
Myth: LinkedIn is part of my daily routine. I’m posting every day or multiple days a week. Why am I not getting traction on my posts? Why am I only getting a handful or less of likes/comments?
Fact: There is a right and a wrong way to post content on LinkedIn. Are you doing everything possible to get that post out to the masses? LinkedIn is not Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or TikTok. The algorithm works differently on this platform.
Myth: I have hundreds or thousands of connections and followers. Why isn’t my phone ringing and why isn’t my inbox buzzing from people wanting to do business with me?
Fact: Who you are engaging with is just as important as just reacting and commenting. Have you looked at those connections and followers? Are you seeing who you want to in your feed?
I’m not a fan of duplicating content but I thought today’s email blast (which I send out every other week to 5 dozen people who have subscribed) was worth repeating here. So if you’re getting this content twice, thank you for subscribing and I apologize.
I promise my next email blast will be original.
