The Power of Word of Mouth

Word of mouth – three small words, but those three words carry so much weight.

These days, the number of business owners who say their clients/customers come from word of mouth…well, let’s just say it’s a lot.  They don’t spend any money on advertising. People refer them when they know they do good quality work.

I met one of those people yesterday at a networking event.  He told us all about the business he works for, and when someone at our table asked, “How do people find you?”.  He proudly answered, “Word of mouth!”.

People know about his company because he and his colleagues do good work. They have customers around the country because people continue to refer the business.

Here’s another example.

A contractor came to our house to look at our roof.  While we mutually agreed that his company probably won’t do any work on our house, I agreed to keep his card and tell people about him and his company.  You never know when you will hear of someone who needs a roofer.  Not to mention he said he’s a Bills fan when he saw my sweatshirt.  That immediately got my attention!

Word of mouth also pays off big if you’re looking for your next opportunity.  Job seekers find their next role because someone is thinking of them when they hear or know of an opening, “that’s perfect for you”.

The more people who know you are looking for a job, the better, because you’re not going to find your next role in a silo.  Be open and honest with that job search and shout it from the rooftops…because you never know.

Never underestimate the power of word of mouth because good work or good people only get referred when people know they are referring someone who’s earned their trust.

How does this all relate to LinkedIn?  Relationships here are built on know, like, and trust.

If we don’t know you, we can’t refer you.  If we don’t like you, we can’t refer you.  If we don’t trust you, we definitely won’t refer you.

  • Your profile is where people get to know you.  Take time to make sure you’re showing up as your best self.
  • Your comments are where people get to like you.  Take time to make sure you’re commenting the same way you would talk to that person if he or she is standing in front of you.
  • Your content is where trust is built.  Trust is earned not given.  No one is going to trust you after you post for one day, one week, even one month.  Post consistently and teach people lessons with stories with your content, and you’ll earn it.

When was the last time that word of mouth paid off for you or someone you know?

➡️ I’m looking for my next opportunity!!!

I’m very interested in Director of Marketing/Communications roles. I’m also applying for content marketing, digital marketing strategy, and social media positions.

If that hiring manager would love to have someone with LinkedIn strategy and know-how who grew from 400-31,700 here, I’ve got that too.
