Do you remember those Richard Simmons or Jane Fonda workout videos?
OK, now try to put aside the images that first come to mind – you know the sweatbands, short shorts, leotard or spandex.
Do you know what made those workout videos so famous? You might say the energy that these two brought to each of their routines.
Do you know what I think it was? Their consistency. Both Richard Simmons and Jane Fonda were consistently cranking out workout videos and their fans were consistently buying them because they resonated with their personalities and energy.
Working out is SO MUCH like LinkedIn, it’s incredible!
The only way to consistently get in shape is to consistently exercise. I don’t know too many people who can exercise once a month or even once a week and see the results they want. They have to show up multiple days and put in the work.
I was doing a routine with the Nike Training Club and one of the trainers said something that made me pause the video and write it down. It was, “A wobble is not going to ruin your trajectory.” Yes it was a stability workout so wobbling goes along with the territory. I wobbled, oh boy did I.
Same thing goes for LinkedIn. If you wobble on LinkedIn, your trajectory won’t be ruined. Perhaps that wobble could be a post that only brings in a small (whatever that number is in your mind) amount of views, or a post that doesn’t produce the conversations you want, whatever the way you define “flop” .
That “flop” won’t ruin your trajectory because it’s social media. You’re still visible on the platform, regardless of the end result that posts produce.
I’ve recently said on multiple calls that if I expanded my triangle strategy to another shape it would be a square. On LinkedIn – profile, engagement and content are all important. So is consistency. Consistency would be the square.
Consistently creating content is the fourth piece of the puzzle. When I started creating videos on LinkedIn, I posted every Tuesday and Friday. Now four years later, I understand just how important that was.
Regardless of what was going on, I was posting those videos. Regardless of the wobbles, the lack of conversations, the lack of views, I was posting consistently.
Just like staying fit, it’s all about consistently. Now where did I put that rainbow leotard?
