Don’t Just Tell Us, Show Us! Relate To Us!

Want to Know Why I LOVE creating content here on LinkedIn???

As the song goes in Grease “Tell me more, tell me more!”

Content for me here is not just writing a couple sentences.  It’s not just posting a picture. It’s not just posting a video. It’s not just the data or the facts. It’s the story behind it.

Love, love, love those stories!

Here’s why storytelling works so well here. To understand where you’re coming from, we need to relate to you. Stories are great for relating because you can either take us behind the scenes to fill in the blanks, or you can use a metaphor where we can better understand why it’s so important, and why we need to pay attention. Put the facts into perspective so we can really understand it.

Here’s an example.

Your LinkedIn profile is like a billboard along the side of a highway.

When talking about the importance of having an optimized LinkedIn profile, I’ll tell people that it’s like a billboard along the side of a highway. You want people to slow down and notice. You want to get the attention of the masses.

When I talk about the importance of visibility here, I’ll use that billboard analogy again and say “What’s the point of an optimized billboard if no one sees it?” You have to shake hands and have conversations here so you can be visible to the masses.

Let’s get more cars, more traffic on the highway to show off your billboard!

Your content is your megaphone!

Here’s another metaphor I use when teaching people my LinkedIn triangle strategy. When you create content on LinkedIn, you’re using your megaphone to earn people’s trust here.

Full circle!

That brings us full circle on the importance of telling us stories.

In order to gain that trust, we need to relate to you. We need to understand the importance of the lesson you’re teaching us, we can only understand if you are speaking our language.

Relating is what it’s all about. People on LinkedIn love to read the stories, absorb the stories and relate to the stories.

Bottom line – tell us the stories! Give us a reason to pay attention to you!
