Every Little Steps Counts!

Little Steps Can Be Big Leaps

I have to start with this visual because ever since I chose this month’s LinkedIn newsletter topic, I’ve had the song in my head.

Now it can be in yours. You’re welcome.

Often, when people think of change or improvement, they think BIG. I’m here to say that you don’t have to take gigantic leaps; it can be a series of baby steps. Whatever form it takes, as long as you’re making progress toward your goal, that’s all that matters.

That applies to everything – both business and personal. Nothing happens overnight. Baby steps bring you closer to your goal.

Let’s take LinkedIn, for example. To optimize your presence here, boost visibility, or “just get better” at using this platform. You don’t have to revolutionize your approach.

When you change the way you think about LinkedIn, you will take the first step (even if it is a baby step) to what you do and how you do it here. Still in that “Isn’t it an online resume” mindset? It’s not. Change your mindset to “This is my billboard”.

Every little thing you do will pay off in the long run. It doesn’t have to be a big change to make a difference. Do you know that your headline is outdated, “blah”, or perhaps it just needs a “fresh take”? Switch up a few words, add a phrase, or a couple of words.

It’s all about the small things that will make the biggest difference in the end.

Are your skills aligned up with what you want to be known for? Or are they outdated? Do you know where your skills are? They are above the recommendations section, so scroll down on your profile. Take a look. You can shuffle them around, assign them to your experience. Ask people to endorse you. Skills are the sprints. Recommendations, which I encourage everyone to get, are the marathons – meaning those testimonials are valuable, but they take more time.

Do you want to be seen here? Time to step away from “the online resume” and have conversations with us! The more you comment, the more people will see you. Whether that’s 15 minutes a day or 2-3 hours a week, add it to your calendar. It’s a little thing that you can do today that will maximize your visibility the more you do it.

The new mayor of the city of Buffalo inspired this newsletter. I’ll explain. Mayor Sean Ryan posted a video on Instagram where he’s standing at a city corner pointing out a sign to “turn left to get a local library”. The problem is that the library was shut down 20 years ago, it’s been closed since 2005. Yet that sign is still up. He’s asking people who live in the city to call in if they see signs like this. He said, “If you can’t get the little things right, no one’s going to trust you with the big things.” I thought, that’s totally a LinkedIn post.

Get the little things right, work on the little things, and then you can tackle the big things.

What little things can you work on now – personally or professionally?

➡️ I’m looking for my next opportunity!!! I’m applying for and interviewing for director of marketing/communications, content marketing, and social media roles. If that hiring manager would love to have someone who built her personal brand here and grew from 400-32,000+, coached 200+ clients, and appeared on 60+ podcasts talking about her unique triangle strategy, I’ve got that too!
