“This is a test of the Emergency Broadcast System…if this was a true emergency…”

by | Sep, 2021

That’s the first thing I think of when I think of “test”.

I ran a test of my own on Friday.

I posted a picture in “stories” with a call to action.

It was a non-business related post, a picture of Progressive Field, asking “If you love watching live sporting events in person, send me a DM”.

I did it because there’s a lot of people who use stories (it’s only available on the mobile version of LinkedIn or “little LinkedIn” as Lea 🌈 Turner calls it). There’s even more people who don’t use it.

From my perspective, I wanted to see if posting stories is really worth it.

Honestly I don’t post stories a lot, I think of it as a way of increasing visibility and accessing a new audience that may not see my posts in the “big LinkedIn” feed, that’s about it.

So here are the results, within 8 hours of posting, 89 people had seen it but only a few people (3) had sent me a DM. I only got 4 DMs before that story disappeared from stories the next day (all stories are temporary, 24 hours later POOF they are gone.

I had some great conversations in the DMs with the people who responded and who I had never spoken to before but I was a little surprised that more people didn’t DM me. I wasn’t asking for anything major, just if they loved attending live sporting events in person.

Do you use stories? How do you use them? Once or twice a week or more? Do you use stories to get more people to your posts? Have you gotten business from posting stories?

Testing works, I’m a big fan. It offers more perspective on what resonates and what doesn’t and gives you insight on your audience too.

On a personal note, all 3 of my kids will be in full-time school tomorrow for the first time EVER. So if I don’t get back to you tomorrow, I promise I will. I’m taking a much needed day off. Self care is SUPER important.
